Shop: Three Ethical Brands For Nursing Mothers
Breastfeeding-friendly clothing... blech. Even a lot of brands claiming to do it right are really missing the mark. After pregnancy, I want to feel like my normal self, and clothing is a powerful tool in the self-care toolbox. Our bodies go through a roller coaster of changes during pregnancy. And while the weightloss is and should be gradual after giving birth, it can be difficult being patient with your still-changing body. Additionally, if you're breastfeeding, you have to have everything easily accessible. Suddenly dressing your pregnant body seems like cake compared to all of these new hurdles and your, however temporary, jello-ring middle. Thankfully, slowly but surely, a handful of designers are starting to understand this really important need for women to feel good during these beautiful, tumultuous seasons during the child-bearing years. These three brands are ones that I think are getting it right, not only with their ethics but with their styles.
All three are really fabulous, ethics conscious, breastfeeding specific brands. We all know that there are a lot of regular clothes we can wear as breastfeeding mothers, but every once in a while, you really need something that is designed with breastfeeding in mind. Perhaps a special occasion or simply something that is functionally discreet. Breastfeeding is a big enough hurdle to jump on it's own. We don't need to feel uncomfortable or frumpy on top of the inevitable fact of leaky boobs.
Boob Design · This is my brand for nursing bras. I have one of their sport bra styles, too, and although the design could be improved, it's supportive enough for running, and allows me to pause a workout and nurse Cosmas without having to change. So, big fan over here. I haven't had an occasion to purchase any of their clothing, but I do really love a lot of their styles. Their ethics are spot on, and they have some really beautiful dresses and basic tops for those who like classic styles in understated colors and prints. Also, let's be real... how cute is this playsuit?!
Loyal Hana · This brand is perfect for those looking for sharp, dressy looks with zero fuss. These designs are not just for the breastfeeding years. Perhaps for an office job or a special event, or even just a go-to date night look. I have this dress and absolutely love it. It's so comfortable that I ask Cody if I look like I'm wearing pajamas every time I wear it. I've been assured by him as well as others that no, it doesn't look like pajamas, and more importantly, it doesn't look like a breastfeeding dress! Believe me when I say that it's only budget constraints that have kept me from buying more from this brand. The only difficulty I've found is that you almost have to use some sort of nursing cover because of the way the zipper works. It's hard to nurse discreetly when your shirt is open from the shoulder. I'd love to see these designs improved so that the zipper doesn't start quite so high. !! May 5th-8th, Loyal Hana sale items are 40% off, final sale with code YAY40. !!
Latch· I'll be purchasing my first Latch dress soon. The Spring/Summer line is stunning. Latch boasts every day items that are really elevated in look. Great for the boho loving woman who is drawn to simple lines and fabrics that go the distance and can handle some drool. I am really, really, excited about this brand. They have just opened for pre-orders, so get thee to their site!
In the words of Latch's founder, E.A. Lepine, "Mama’s, I know you’re juggling so much and you’re doing a great job! I hope these dresses are the sigh of relief for you that they have been to me. Here’s to womanhood, motherhood and a dress for every day!"
Honorable mention goes to Sonnet James—which is not specifically a nursing line. However, the Noa and Poppy dresses are stunning options, and the playsuit is just rad. Whitney really just keeps on nailing it with her designs.
